With the 2023-2024 school year ending this week, many students are brimming with excitement about the summer break. Although the school year officially ends on June 7th, most students have already planned out their summer plans in detail to make the most of their two-month break from school.

“I’m heading to Xinjiang, a province located in the northwest of China, this June for a road trip with my family,” said Eddie L., a 10th grader. But travelling is not the only priority for him this summer. “After my trip, I’ll be coming back to Guangzhou to play volleyball and prepare for the upcoming school year,” he added.

Another student, Sophia C. in grade 10, also plans to travel, but is also looking forward to the long-awaited rest in the summer. She said, “my plan for the summer is to go on vacation and rest. I plan to go to Beijing and maybe the Maldives.”

Choosing to focus on his hobbies this summer, Kyle C. in grade 9 said, “The summer plans I have is preparing for dance competitions and other sport competitions, also preparing for next year, doing some prep some classes to get ready for next year.”

Although summer break is a chance for students to take a momentary break from learning, some students are still choosing to continue their studies outside of school. Emily D., a student in grade 11 said, “I have plans to go to Canada, Japan and Turkey to meet with my family and friends and also for a university program in Canada.”

While the arrival of summer does bring about opportunities to rest, recharge, find new hobbies, spend time with family, and travel, it also means that students must go two long months without seeing their friends and teachers. After a year of following the same class schedule, eating lunch with the same people, and learning in the same classrooms, it’s no doubt that some students will miss the school during the break.

Eddie L. shares his thoughts about missing school: “I’ll  miss seeing my friends every day, participating in school activities, just school in general. I’ll also miss the teachers who cheer me up and help me out every day.”

On a similar note, Emily D. will also miss her friends over the break. She said, “I’ll miss my friends the most, because all of us will be going to different places and won’t be able to hang out much.”

Additionally, Kyle C. also said, “I am going to miss my friends and teachers, they have been with my all year. I was very used to the environment I have and the people that are here with me. So not being able to see them for two months and not being able to be with them next year is pretty sad.”

On the other hand, Sophia C. is highly anticipating the summer. She remarked, “I’m very excited that school is finally ending, as it was a stressful year.”

Overall, everyone has mixed emotions about the summer, but when the school bell plays “Payphone” by Maroon 5 for the very last time in the 2023-2024 school year, both students and teachers will finally receive their well-deserved rest after a year of hard work.
