Son Heung-Min, a South Korean Premier League star playing for Tottenham Hotspur, has won the FIFA Puskas Award at the annual Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony held on December 17, 2020, as a virtual event.

Son became the first in South Korea and the second in Asia to win the FIFA Puskas Award, which is given to a player, male or female, who is judged to have scored the best goal of the year. Son’s wonder goal was against Burnley on December 7, 2019, which was immediately acclaimed by numerous football stars, including Gary Lineker, a former striker for Tottenham Hotspurs and current sports broadcaster.

In that contest against Burnley, Son sprinted from the edge of Tottenham’s penalty area to the other, surpassing six opponents in 12 seconds. Prior to winning the Puskas Award, Son had gained multiple titles for this solo goal, most notably the Premier League’s Goal of the Year for the 2019-2020 season.

FIFA stated their reasoning behind Son’s nomination, commenting, “Twelve thrilling seconds were all it took for Son Heung-Min to take the ball from his own 18-year box and find the net at the other end.” FIFA further commented that “The goal showcased everything that has led Tottenham Hotspur fans to fall in love with their Korea Republic star, with pace, power, persistence and clinical finishing all on show.”

In addition to FIFA’s comments, Son wrote on his social media account that it was a “very special night” and will “never forget this memory.” He also thanked his fans for the immense support he received

Sean P., a senior at AISG, remarked on his thoughts on Son’s nomination for the FIFA Puskas award, commenting, “I was amazed when I saw that goal. I expected him to win the award because it was surely the most stunning goal I’ve ever seen.”

Henny L., a sophomore at AISG, similarly expressed his support for Son Heung-Min, commenting, “I think FIFA made the right decision. He has been my favorite player since I was a kid, and it’s really cool to see him winning awards.”

There were several prospects for this award, including Jordan Flores’ striking volley for Dundalk in the league of Ireland, along with Caroline Weir’s astounding long-range shot against Manchester United.

Meanwhile, at the Best Football Awards, FC Bayern München striker Robert Lewandowski was named the Best FIFA Men’s Player, and Manchester City defender Lucy Bronze was given the Best FIFA Women’s player.
