Mr. Sean Menton has worked as a guidance and college counselor at AISG for 2 years, and has helped numerous high school students. Sadly, Mr. Menton’s term at AISG has come to end, and he is moving on to serve at another international school.
In discussing his time at AISG, Mr. Menton says he has enjoyed “the sense of how students share their background” with one another. In fact, his most memorable experiences involve walking through the hallways, hearing students switch from one language to another. Despite the fact that students are able to create a multicultural community at school, some also face problems with fitting in. AISG’s population includes students from all over the world, and diverse identities can sometimes create problems for students seeking commonalities with peers and teachers at school. Mr. Menton has played a large part in making sure that these students feel comfortable. He has enjoyed the spread of different cultures, but has enjoyed even more so how students are taking part in learning about these new cultures. This is part of the reason that Mr. Menton has valued his experiences with China trips so much.
Mr. Menton plans to move back to Shanghai, his first home in China from years ago, to begin his job at SAS (Shanghai American School) Pudong. He looks forward to working with new students and adapting to a new school culture, but is “intimidated by the size of student population” as he worries that he will not get the opportunity to familiarize himself with every student, as he has done at AISG.
Mr. Menton has contributed much to the students at AISG by directing them on their path in high school, and providing moral support. He is eager to help his new students, but will deeply miss AISG and all of the students and faculty he’s worked with over the past four years.
