P_initialPrepare yourselves: final exams are nearly upon us!!

1. Know the format of the exam and what the exam will cover.

Different subjects will have different formats on the final exams, and teachers will generally inform students about the format ahead of time. Take notes on what the teacher tells you especially in the last few classes leading up to finals, then modify your studying to make it specific to the format and topics on the test.

2. Get enough Zzzzzzzs.

SLEEP! SLEEP EARLY! SLEEP LOTS! I know this is the hardest thing to do as a student, whether it is due to procrastination of homework, an overbearing workload, or those distracting TV shows. Nevertheless, your brain will be working in overdrive this week. If you don’t get enough sleep, that will only make this week more torturous. You will feel stressed, tired and unable to focus. There’s only a week left of school. It’s about time you finally get your sleep schedule right.

3. Break large studying tasks into small tasks.

Don’t just tell yourself to study science or math. You’ll just end up being overwhelmed and not knowing where to start, often at times even procrastinating. Instead, tell yourself that you will finish studying one particular unit, and you can even break down the unit into sections. This way, the studying will not seem as daunting, and you can finish studying, one small step at a time.

4. Limit distractions.

Work in the library or in a place in your house where you will not get easily distracted. But most importantly, KEEP YOUR PHONE AWAY FROM YOU. Let’s be real. You’re not going to need your phone for any assignments or studying. Also, even though you need your laptop, there apps or extensions that can block certain websites like Facebook, Youtube, Tumblr, 9gag, Buzzfeed etc, being telling yourself you’ll spend 15 minutes on these websites will only turn into 30, then an hour, then the whole night..It takes self-control, but you’ll get a lot of work done even by staying away from these websites for only an hour.

5. Quiz yourself.

Only reading through notes will not commit them to your memory. To ensure that you actually know the material, quiz yourself. Cover the definitions of key concepts and see if you can recall them. Do practice problems and see if you get them right. Use flashcards. Different people have different studying methods, so find out what works for YOU.

Finally, STAY POSITIVE! Tell yourself YOU CAN DO THIS!

In the wise words of Thomas Edison, “If we did all the things we are capable of, we would astound ourselves.”

Best of luck on your finals!
