First Progress Report for New Students

It can be tough for new students to get used to a new way of teaching and grading. Each school has its own curriculum, so most students spend their time either behind or ahead of the rest of their classmates. Some new students at AISG felt like they had a rough start at first but after the the first progress report, most of them feel that they are settling in better. The progress report was a wake-up call for older students while it tells new students where they are and how they need to manage their time.

Hannah, a new student in the eleventh grade, answered some questions reflecting on her first progress report and how she is adjusting to AISG.

How do you feel after the first progress report ? At first, I was nervous to get the progress report, and although my grades are not perfect, I am feeling okay with it. There is always a learning curve to a new school and overcoming it can be a challenge, but the teachers at AISG have their students’ best interest at heart which makes all the difference.

Do you feel school is getting harder of easier? Being in the IBDP, I feel as though school keeps demanding more time and higher expectations. However, it is manageable, but it is a big load. A simple answer – it is getting harder.

How are you adjusting to the school so far? Transitioning to AISG has been pretty smooth. People are friendly for the most part and the atmosphere is nice. Teachers are down-to-earth people and make learning fun, sometimes. I really believe that teachers can make or break a school, and most of the teachers at AISG have held to the ‘making’ of the school.

Do you think you will get use to the A.I.S.G way of teaching? For 11th and 12th graders, the ‘way of teaching’ is IB, which is intimidating and can be very stressful and seem useless, but it is what it is and I have to make the best of it.

Changing schools can be hard and put a student academically behind by as much as six months. However, the new students haven’t backed down from the challenges, diligently studying and actively participating in clubs and activities. School is only going to get harder but as new students we have to step up our game and do what we can to catch up.
