David Bowie, pop legend. The artist was one of the first if not the first pop chameleon in terms of style of songwriting. He did everything, even going so far as to create an alter ego dubbed Ziggy Stardust. Born in Brixton, South London, the singer died two days after his 69th birthday—it has been reported that he died of terminal liver cancer, but this has not yet been confirmed. David’s fans laid candles and flowers at the base of a mural in his hometown to pay tribute throughout this week.
Bowie was a song writer and a performer, but most of all he was an icon and a changer of music. He did what he did best: he was himself, unabashedly, and embraced everything that was thrown his way. He wore costumes nobody would dream of and he did so with a smile on his face and a song playing across his lips. This seemed to remain true even until the time of his peaceful passing with the release of his last album “Blackstar” on his birthday. He was set to be honored at Carnegie Hall on March 31st.
Apart from his time on stage Bowie made a name for himself on the big screen. His first big break was in the film “The Man Who Fell to Earth” which then led to one of his more iconic roles in the limelight, playing a flirty and song-loving Goblin King known as Jareth in the movie “Labyrinth”. After that his film career took off. Getting a cameo in “Zoolander” and then later starring as Nikola Tesla in “The Prestige,” Bowie delighted fans in movie theaters as well as on stage performing in front of thousands.
David Bowie was one of the greats, and according to rollingstone.com, he was ranked at 39 on the top 100 music artists to ever live, knocking out bands like Pink Floyd, Queen and even Metallica. Death can be mournful but looking back on the life of an artist like David Bowie has been an enjoyable journey for everyone. Although he will be sorely missed, the fans of this pop legend will always find the time to put on his CD’s and records to remember the man who changed pop music.
