Recently, AISG upgraded the toilet paper from thin and flimsy to thick and textured due to students’ long-term complaints.

The recent change in toilet paper is aimed at enhancing student comfort and satisfaction. AISG administration made this decision based on student feedback indicating dissatisfaction with the previous toilet paper quality. As the Student Council Secretary, Henry. L explained, “I believe toilet paper has been regarded as very thin, hard, and easy to break. It has also been said to feel like sandpaper and was very low quality.”

Student Council’s Involvement

The Student Council played a crucial role in this transition. They cooperated with The General Council gathered input from students during the student voice meeting and relayed it to the Executive Council, which communicated with the Administration. The process involved the collaboration of the Student Council, Executive Council, and General Council, they worked closely with school administration to assess the feasibility of the change and coordinate with School Services. The Student Council President, Euna. J mentioned,

“The General Council gathered feedback from student voice meetings, which was passed on to the Executive Council, who shares feedback with administration. Finally, the administration will pass the message to school services, who will work on this situation

Comfort and Clean

The toilet paper upgrade is driven by the student’s desire for a comfortable and clean toilet experience. After acknowledging AISG’s previous toilet paper quality, a tenth-grade student from Guangzhou Zhongshan Whampoa School for Hong Kong and Macao Students (ZWIS), Faye. W suggests,

“If the toilet paper is uncomfortable and low quality it affects students feeling of school’s facilities and overall school experience.”

Vivian. C is a tenth grader who has comprehensive experience with the previous low-quality toilet paper and new toilet paper, she said,

“The quality of toilet paper is not very important to my overall school experience, but nice toilet paper is something good to have.”

A staff member who was involved in the toilet paper promote process stated,

“We want to provide a more comfortable experience for students and reduce waste.” The new toilet paper is designed to be both softer and more environmentally friendly, aligned with the sustainability standard.

Student’s Reactions

Students’ response regarding the new toilet paper is mixed with positivity and indifferent. Some students like Vivian. L claimed the new toilet paper is “better than before.” Others remained indifferent, like Shannie L, who said the new toilet paper is “still pretty bad.” The doubt about this change reflects the fact that the school still has a long path to go in enhancing the toilet facilities. Most students agree that toilet facilities are crucial for healthy and mental development, therefore, the cleanliness and high facilities quality reflect the school’s care and respect toward students.

While students realized that their voices are important to AISG, they expressed their desire for consistency throughout school. Vivian.C is a swimming APAC varsity player; she mentioned the toilet paper in the D building swimming pool hasn’t shifted as other toilet paper.

 Teacher Perspectives

Teachers have also noted the importance of the upgrade. Ms. Trobridge commented,

Ms. Trobridge highlighted the importance of quality restroom supplies by saying:“Quality restroom supplies are an important aspect of personal hygiene and health. “

Student Council’s Effort and other student feedback.

After receiving all the feedback, the Student Council, General Council, Executive Council, and administration all work together to improve the school facilities. The toilet paper transition is a small change, but it shows students that AISG is listening to their advice. The Executive Council president agrees that this change in toilet paper reflects a larger trend of improving student facilities,

“Because student voices in AISG matter and are made sure that they are heard.”

In addition, Executive Council Secretary Henry.L also mentioned,

“I would say that I think the toilet paper upgrade was an exception. Many of the time the administration has already thought of what we want to upgrade. But many factors like cost, sustainability, and workload can all drive them to say no to many of our feedback. I hope in the future we can keep pushing and stay committed to one piece of feedback, just like with the toilet paper situation so we can change the school for the better of the students.”
