On Friday, January 15th and Saturday, January 16th, the GISAC basketball tournament took place in the Ramnasium. The GISAC (Guangzhou International School Athletic Conference) league is a brand-new league that was started this school year involving international schools in Guangzhou, Dongguan, and Zengcheng.
The schools involved include AISG, UISG (Utahloy International School of Guangzhou), BSG (British School of Guangzhou), UISZC (Utahloy International School of Zengcheng), ISD (International School of Dongguan), and CIS (Clifford International School).
After our girls and boys teams played four games each, they both came out on top, earning a first place tournament trophy each. However, a second trophy was given out as well. Since GISAC league games had been going on since the beginning of the season, the team who won the most games and earned the most points for their wins, draws, and losses would be the team to become the league champions.
Thanks to the girl’s undefeated league season, they were at the top of the pool, therefore they brought home a second first place trophy. Yet, due to a devastating 1-point loss to Clifford, our boys were second in the pool, earning a second place league trophy.
Hopefully, this tournament was preparation for the APAC basketball tournament that both teams will attend from Wednesday, January 27th to Sunday, January 31st.
Andrew Elliott, senior, the captain of the boys team, and someone who has been playing on various AISG basketball teams since 7th grade stated that he was very happy with the results of the tournament because they won and they played well.
It’s no doubt that this team had grown over the course of the season, and when Andrew was asked about this, he said, “We’ve become more focused and we have a greater desire to win as a team. We are working towards one goal now, whereas at the beginning of the season, it felt as though we were all over the place. We’ve had to sit down and figure out what we needed and I think we’ve done a pretty good job of achieving those goals so far.”
Since APAC is rapidly approaching, Andrew said, “We’re expecting some good competition at the tournament but we’ve shown that over the years that we’ve improved as a basketball school, so they can expect us to do well. And, if we don’t, we know that we will play well, so we can finish the season strong and happy.”
Hopefully, both teams will excel at the tournament and bring home something for us to be proud of, even if it’s not a trophy!
