On Tuesday, November 30, our boys and girls Varsity Basketball teams participated in the GISAC (Guangzhou International Schools Athletics Conference) tournament against five other schools in the Guangdong area. It took place at the Utahloy International School of Guangzhou (UISG) gym, and both teams left the campus with first place trophies in hand. This tournament was the first GISAC in over two years due to the pandemic, and all the participating teams were buzzing with excitement the morning of.
For the boys, “all-tournament” honors were given to Richie L., Abe Q., and Jacky L., while the girls’ honors were given to Rebecca H., Angela L., and Sharon C. When asked about his contribution to the team and his impressive shooting performance that resulted in seven made three-pointers in the finals, Richie stated that “[he] felt good going into the game and [he] tried to remain confident throughout” and that “once [he] got going, everything was smooth.” Prior to this, the boys team played their final opponent, Clifford International School, in the finals of a previous tournament.
When asked about the return of GISAC in general, junior and co-captain Sophia P. said that “[she was] excited that it [was] back because the last time [she] participated and played against these schools was when I was a freshman.” After the finals, she said that “it was a totally different experience than two years ago because [she has] grown as a person and a leader” and that “the culture of our team [was] very different.”
Overall, the tournament was extremely enjoyable and our sports teams were ecstatic to miss a day of school and compete for our school. All of the athletes played hard, and the results demonstrated that. We look forward to next year’s GISAC tournament, and we hope that it will go just as well!
