With a new school year comes new elections for StuCo. On August 25th, the elections were held during a 45-minute community event at the end of the day. As juniors gathered into the library and shuffled into their seats, a sense of nervousness and excitement crept into the air. The candidates were all very well-rounded and rigorous people, so everyone in the room knew it would be hard to make their final choices.

All of the candidates displayed ambitions to try and make AISG a better place; with Nino Lee’s attention-grabbing speech about the drug incident that he was involved in, making a strong exit by throwing his hat across the room, and Helen’s persuasive speech about having pizza parties if she was elected. Overall, it was very entertaining and it was clear that all the candidates were ambitious and dedicated.

The next day, the results were revealed. For president was Helen Liao, the vice-president was Tomoka Yamada, the secretary was Lynn Maekawa, and the treasurer was Kelvin Fan. To get to know our StuCo 2015 members better, an interview was conducted with four main questions: What kind of person are you? What do you like to do in your free time? What are you excited about for the school year? What sort of changes you would like to make in AISG?

Helen Liao (President):

Honestly, sometimes I am very energetic and other times I am pretty calm so things that I do during my free time are pretty unpredictable. Sometimes I go out and hang out with some friends and other times I just stay home and do my own things.

I am very excited for the grade events that we will be having. We’re trying to plan something that’s competitive but also fun at the same time.

AISG is a great school but if I could change something I would definitely increase the number of students. More people means more fun! The more the merrier!

Tomoka Yamada (Vice President):

At school I look serious, and I do think this is one of my negative traits. In reality, I like to help other people, and I have a lot of patience. Generally, I am the kind of a person who prefers to work rather than play. But I do have things that I like to do during free time. I don’t particularly do the same activities during my free time— it depends on my mood. Sometimes I solve math problems, play the piano, draw pictures, read books, and play with my dog.

Generally, I am excited about all of the events that StuCo is hosting. Among all those events, I am looking forward to see people performing in the StuCo talent show. This year’s theme for GENCO (General Council) is innovation, and I would like to make some changes in AISG if I can. Now my job is to serve the community, and not to lead the group because StuCo is there for supporting the student body. Although that is the case, I still have a change that I would like to make. I know there are students who have concerns about the food served during lunch, and I understand them. I am more than willing to sort this problem out with other StuCo members. However, I cannot promise the community that there will be a significant change.

Lynn Maekawa (Secretary):

I don’t know what kind of a person I am, but I like to think of myself as a happy and positive person. In my free time, I like to play my instruments, spend time with my friends, watch TV shows and bake. I play the oboe and soprano saxophone, which have been my passions for quite a while now. I think that learning an instrument is a great experience, because it trains you to be persistent. It’s ok to occasionally sit back and relax; even IB students needs some rests! Some shows I am watching or have watched are Pretty Little Liars, How to Get Away with Murder, How I Met Your Mother, and Revenge. My favorite movies are Whispers of the Heart, Beauty and the Beast, 10 Things I Hate About You and Corpse Bride. If you have any further questions about me, do not hesitate to come up and ask me! 🙂

I am excited for all of the events coming up this school year, especially Open Mic, the Christmas Events and Field Day. Open Mic is a great opportunity to showcase hidden talents throughout the school. I strongly encourage you guys to go up and have some fun. 🙂 Christmas Events are always a joy to plan. Even though it is right around exams, StuCo will do its best to make your lives jollier for the season. Can’t wait to show you guys what we’ve planned! I am not really an athletic person, but I always enjoy StuCo Field Days. It is a chance for us to unite as a school body and have some fun.

Compared to some schools I’ve been to, I think that AISG is the most well rounded and nice-hearted school. However, a school is never completely perfect. Though I did not present any specific changes in my speech, I am open to any suggestion or ideas. This year, I want to raise our grade spirit through grade bonding activities, and this cannot be done alone. I will need your help for that. I want to see spirited, excited faces of yours at these events! Let’s show everyone else that the Class of 2017 is the best!

Kelvin Fan (Treasurer):

I think that I am usually a relaxed and easygoing person. However, this does not mean that I don’t take my work seriously. I like playing basketball and running with friends. I think that sports are a great way to get to know and bond with different people. But when I’m alone, I enjoy (maybe not exactly enjoy) playing the violin in my free time. I admit that playing an instrument is not always enjoyable, but it does give you a sense of accomplishment when you are able to play a piece well, and that is what keeps me going.

Since this is my first year in StuCo, I am very excited for almost all the upcoming events this year! I’m very excited to finally be able to contribute to the planning of these fun events. Although StuCo events are already very successful, I am excited to have the ability to change things up a bit and make it an all-new, if not more enjoyable, experience for all of you. We are already off to a great start for the Family Fun Day event, and I can’t wait for this first big event of the year; I really think the Grade 11 booth will be great and hopefully we will raise a lot of money for future activities!

As I promised in my speech, I hope to make StuCo more approachable. I know a lot of you have many innovative ideas for what StuCo should do, and I am more than happy to hear about them! We will try to find a way, probably through surveys, to gather all your valuable suggestions and feedback before and after StuCo activities. With only four people per grade in StuCo, many of the great ideas for activities and events come from the entire school; essentially, all StuCo does is to make sure that all these great ideas are successfully executed, and I will make this process easier.
