Grade 12 StuCo: Year Without Candidates

• Bookmarks: 512426

For every grade, some excitement sparks at the start of the year due to elections. Unfortunately, this year for the seniors, this was not the case. Out of the entire grade, only four people ran for Student Council—one candidate for each office. This took away any excitement about listening to the speeches because there weren’t any choices to make. The lack of competitiveness was also very evident in the speeches themselves. “All the speeches sounded very improvised and they didn’t seem very well thought out,” explained disappointed audience member Brian Jung. Although the speeches didn’t seem very prepared, according to Leoul Woldemariam, “their sincerity was clearly present”.

The new president for the grade this year is Yiuwai Yuen, who explains that he is really “looking forward to the year” and that with all the StuCo experience that he has had since freshman year, he believes that “great things will be accomplished.” Other than Yiuwai, the rest of the members have never been part of Student Council. Although this is the case, Vice President Jiwon Kim, Secretary Minseok Choi and Treasurer Karan Vasdev are all very trusted and well-known amongst the rest of the students. Treasurer Karan Vasdev decided to run due to his conjoined interest in both economics and politics, which highlight his suitability as a StuCo member. He states that he is expecting an “interesting year” due to the number of new people that have joined StuCo. Hopefully the upcoming events will be planned to perfection with the new Student Council members. Congratulations to the new General Council members!
