Innocent People in Burma To Provoke UN Reaction

Over 600 people have been killed by the Burma security forces since February 1, reported by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The largest city, Yangon has faced violent conflicts with most civilian casualties.

Over a month ago, Myanmar Junta imposed martial law on large towns in Yangon, killing hundreds of civilians including children. Many journalists were imprisoned and harshly punished. Some even were tortured in the process. Each day, the military’s aggression worsens where some soldiers were witnessed using anti-tank launchers, grenades, and other war materials.

The inhumane behaviors of the armed forced continue as UN Security Councils fail to take action against them.

The protest initially started as a peaceful march towards democracy but has failed due to the military engaging in firearms against the group. Myanmar also referred to as “Burma”, has been under political unrest as the military seized the country, disregarding the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. She has been under house arrest since then, angering the citizens.

Min Aung Hlaing, the military commander-in-chief, has assumed control. He has long exercised immense political strength, effectively retaining the Tatmadaw’s (Malaysian military’s) power even though the country transitioned to democracy. For his alleged role in the military’s attacks on ethnic minorities, he has faced international condemnation and sanctions.

Gen Hlaing attempted to defend the overthrow in his first official remarks after the takeover. He said that the military was on the people’s side and would establish a “real and disciplined democracy.”
