The annual HS Battle of the Books competition will take place on March 6 at Nansha College Preparatory Academy (NCPA). Librarian Ms. Navis, explains that “there are three teams this year, one is all HS students, one is all MS students, and one is a mixture of both HS and MS students.” Practices for the competition have already started.
Ms. Navis encourages high school students to participate in the competition because the books chosen this year “tries to target [the interests of different students] in different genres.” In addition, the competition can be considered as Creativity in CAS for juniors and seniors taking the full IB Diploma.
Ms. Navis also stated how it’s usually more difficult to form the high school team, “because students seem to not have as much time to do independent reading.” Her comment leads to the question of whether or not high school students still read during their own time, especially students who
Senior Chrisee Z. is a heavy reader who reads almost every day. The genres she enjoys reading right now are classical literature, politics, and philosophy. When asked about what she thinks the benefits of reading are, she commented, “reading is a coping mechanism for [stress], and it gives me the motivation to get out of bed. So, I can’t speak for everyone.”
