A common stereotype regarding many young web influencers living together in a ‘collab house’ is that they are probably going to be non-productive and constantly partying. However, this is not the case for the Los Angeles-based Tik Tok content hub, the Hype House.
According to the New York Times, “The Hype House is a Spanish-style mansion perched at the top of a hill on a gated street in Los Angeles,” where young social media influencers, such as various Tik Tok and YouTube stars, can stay and create content while they are in town. It is a more efficient alternative to Airbnbs, due to many renters with strict policies on their customers shooting YouTube or Tik Tok videos due to possible damages on furniture. The Hype House provides collaborative opportunities among Generation Z’s most popular social media influencers.
Co-creators of the Hype House, YouTube star Thomas Petrou and Tik Tok star Chase Hudson (also known as Lil Huddy on social media platforms), maintain strict house rules in order to promote efficiency and productivity. For younger creators like Charli D’Amelio, a 15-year-old influencer who has over 15 million Tik Tok followers, the Hype House has also become a community of support and a place to escape from the pressure of escalating fame.
Fans debate whether the Hype House deserves all the ‘hype’ and attention they have been receiving from millions of fans worldwide. AISG sophomore Sandy N. expressed her opinions on the topic, saying that “I think the hype house has gained a lot of attention from teens because all their favourite Tik Tok stars are together and it’s a nice feeling to have. They are all friends who interact with each other, create Tik Toks together, and all have a large following. Things like these make their Tik Toks more enjoyable since they can collaborate with each other.”
On a daily basis, Petrou manages the Hype House and ensures that members are constantly producing content for their respective social media platforms. Hype House members stated that they post an average of two TikTok videos per day and approximately one YouTube video per week. They also stay updated on social media with their millions of fans.
When discussing policies for the Hype House, Petrou stressed the fact that “You can’t come and stay with us for a week and not make any videos, it’s not going to work. This whole house is designed for productivity. If you want to party, there’s hundreds of houses that throw parties in L.A. every weekend. We don’t want to be that.”
Whilst full-time members are required to produce content daily, there are other members such as Tik Tok stars Charli and Dixie D’Amelio, who only occasionally visit the Hype House.
Another sophomore, Jami R., revealed her opinions on teenage influencers living together. “Since the Hype House generally has influencers with the same audiences and the same goals, I think that they are able to work productively together as it is easier to collaborate with each other and they can reach out to different fan bases. The most important part of is having a supportive environment for a bunch of teenage influencers is that they understand each other.”
