The Addams Family: Music and Monsters Unite

Following the musical last year, “Adrift in Macao”, AISG is featuring another musical this year, “The Addams Family”. This musical was originally a movie produced in 1991 and is also performed as a Broadway musical. The plot is firmly based on the broadway musical version, since it is a musical.

Each year, the musical consists of two separate areas of focus, the actors and the musicians. Both the actors and musicians are required to audition to earn a place in the musical. However, this year there was only an actor audition. An audition for the musicians did not take place: all musicians who applied for the musical were granted a place.

However, the auditions for the actors took place last Wednesday and Thursday. According to a lead actor of the musical this year, Gloria Huang, who will be playing Morticia Addams in the play, the audition was performing 2 songs and a dialogue scene in front of three teachers of the musical, Mr. Boyd, Mr. Pihowich and Ms. Lin. A total of 16 people were granted a place in the musical, most of whom are new talent with little to no experience in musical theater.

Practice for both the musicians and the actors started on Tuesday the 30th. Actors went over their scripts for the first time, stating that the script is absolutely hilarious and that they never laughed so hard while reading a script. Musicians also went over their music for the first time. Percussionist Paraash Manwani, a senior spending his 4th year in the musical as a musician, stated that the musical pieces he received this year contained the best music he ever encountered during his time as a musical perfermor. He stated that new genres such as the Latin-styled songs will add on to the hilarious plot of the musical and make it even better.

Both the actors and the musicians insisted that the musical this year will be different than the musicals from the previous years, and this might actually become the best musical ever in AISG history. Expect a great performance from the musical this year!
