Is Chainsaw Man Worth the Hype?

• Bookmarks: 642718

Chainsaw Man doesn’t have an official release date yet fan anticipation is massive. Chainsaw Man is one of the most popular mangas in the world during its two-year run selling 9.3 million copies of its first volume.

The manga had only finished its first phase in December 2020. At the same time, it was announced that MAPPA will be animating the anime adaptation for Chainsaw Man.

Chainsaw Man, the creation of Tatsuki Fujimoto, is based around a world full of antagonistic Devils. Denji (protagonist) attempts to repay his father’s Yakuza debt, but he becomes embroiled with some nefarious Devils and killed in the process. When he is left to die, Denji merges with his dog (that looks like a chainsaw because it is a devil).

The series is praised and enjoyed for its colorful and unique designs along with characters that break the mold of classic tropes and cliches. Chainsaw Man revels in crude humor and graphic gore. The manga does not just use graphic gore for the sake of using gore— it actually adds to the world-building, similar to Attack on Titan.

Part of the reason why Chainsaw Man is so highly anticipated by fans is because of MAPPA’s track record of good anime adaptations. Some examples are Banana Fish, Kakegurui, and the final season of Attack on Titan. Not to mention its most recent success story, Jujutsu Kaisen. MAPPA’s adaptation of the acclaimed manga (Jujutsu Kaisen) is one of the few anime to be considered as good as—if not even better— than the source material.

The Chainsaw Man anime will help to diversify mainstream anime like the original manga did, particularly those based on Shonen Jump titles. It isn’t another battle series, isekai, or school-based drama. Combined with its colorful gore, Chainsaw Man should easily stand out among most of the competition upon its release.
