Is Counter Strike Global Offensive Dying?

Counter-Strike’s initial release date was 2000 and Counter-Strike Global Offensive (a new version with improvements) was released on August 12, 2012. Recently, time after time, people are asking: is CS GO dying?

CS GO is currently ranked third by Valve (the organization that creates many games, including CS GO). This is shocking because normally, it’s second. In addition, it is strongly believed that the game is dying because there was a new update a few months back that made it harder to gamble. The currency used for gambling are skins. Skins are virtual pixels that “make your guns look better” and they are actually worth real money.  There are people with thousands of dollars in the game, which they can cash out to PayPal if they want. CS GO gambling is a big part of the game. Many people just play the game to gamble. It’s very advanced with and has many different types, such as roulette, coin flips, and many more.

Another factor that is believed to have decreased the number of people playing the game is the professional scene. In recent years, the professional scene has developed and become more popular. There are even huge prize pools, for example in 2017, a tournament’s prize pool was $1.5 million, where the first place got $800,000. Many would rather watch and follow the pro scene than actually play the game. CS GO is like football in that way: people play it, but they watch it much more.

So, is CS GO dying? In my opinion, CS GO isn’t dying. The table to the right provides information about the average players per month. Under all the circumstances, the average players per month are quite consistent and don’t vary. The game just isn’t at its peak anymore. You can’t expect a game to stay at the top forever. In addition, PUBG charts count Chinese players, but CS GO also have Chinese versions of the game which do not count in steam. Overall, CS GO is a successful game and will stay around for many years.
