Jumping into Parent-Teacher Conferences

• Bookmarks: 321293

Just two weeks after the fall break ended, parents were invited to attend the parent-teacher conferences (PTCs), which were held on October 21 and 22. This invitation allowed parents to converse with their children’s teachers from various subjects. There are different sessions in which parents could sign up for, with each session being around two hours each.

Parents often take PTCs as an opportunity to get to know their sons/daughters better. It is a chance for them to ask questions about their children’s academic studies, and allows teachers to provide information about their child’s courses, approaches to learning, and overall insights on how the student is doing this far in the school year.

Grade 11 student Gayatri G., expressed that “having the parent-teacher conferences now are kind of pointless,” as the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) year 1 students have only been through at least one summative in the one and a half month that we have been in school. “My teachers only talked about the curriculum, and didn’t talk about my grades and how I’m doing in class,” she says, “They could’ve talked to me about it during class.” Overall, she was not satisfied with this semester’s PTC.

Another Grade 11 student, Ellie C. expressed that the PTC “helped me better understand where I need to make improvements.” Although she isn’t in the IBDP, she still receives the same amount of workload and has to meet the same deadlines as everyone else. She says that the PTC “reassured” her that she has her friends and teachers to help her throughout junior year. In contrast to Gayatri G., she was satisfied with what her teachers had to say about her progress this far into the school year.

Generally, this semester’s PTC ended on a good note, even though students had mixed feelings about how useful it was.
