One of South Korea’s top three entertainment companies, JYP, has added a newest girl group, Itzy, to their family. Following the two previous world renown K-pop girl groups, Wonder Girls and Twice, the newest act consists of five members: Yeji, Yuna, Ryujin, Chaeryeong and Lia. Itzy is the first girl group to debut since Twice.

Itzy debuted with their title song “Dalla Dalla” of their single album Itz Different on February 12th. With the oldest member, Yeji, born in early 2000 and the youngest member, Yuna, born in 2003, the average age for the group is 17 years-old.

Prior to their debut, the group had gained popularity with members appearing on different K-pop shows, including K-Pop Star 3, Sixteen–the show in which TWICE was formed, and last year’s YG Entertainment survival show Mixnine. Ryujin first gained attention for her appearance on Mixnine as she came in first place. Additionally, both Yuna and Ryujin also starred in BTS’s Love Yourself Highlight Reel, with Yuna acting alongside BTS’s Jungkook and Ryujin dancing with BTS’s Jimin and J-Hope. Chaeryeong was a part of the survival show along with TWICE members, however, she failed to debut with the group in 2015.

Itzy’s “Dalla Dalla” has gained many controversial opinions as critics and netizens online have expressed their confusion with the different genres included in the three-minute song. Despite the controversy, by midnight KST on February 12, the group had already gained 13,933,725 views and managed to break the record for Most Viewed K-Pop Group Debut Music Video Within 24 Hours.
