Grade 12 Takes On the Friday Song

Starting two years ago, the faculty decided to play a song as a replacement to the regular, boring school bell at 3 p.m, to remind students and teachers the of the weekend. The first ever Friday song was “Friday I’m in Love” by The Cure. For the first semester of the 2017-18 school year, it was changed into “Bang on the Drums” chosen by MS principal Mr. Bunnell, and in the second semester, the Class of 2018 got to pick. They voted on “Should I Stay or Should I Go”, by The Clash. Last semester, “Feel it Still” was selected by the 8th graders to celebrate their last year in middle school. As this is the last semester for us, the seniors, we got the chance to pick the Friday song for this semester.

Ms. Barga sent out an email earlier last week to seniors for song nominations and the following songs were nominated:

  • Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin
  • Sunflower by Post Malone and Swae Lee
  • I Feel Good by James Brown
  • Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves
  • Beautiful by Bazzi ft. Camilla Cabello
  • Take on Me by A-Ha
  • Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen
  • Dancing Queen by ABBA
  • Circle of Life from The Lion King
  • Friday by Rebecca Black

Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night” was taken out of the nominated list due to inappropriate content of this song.

Ultimately, “Take on Me” by A-Ha was voted by the majority. It will now be played every Friday afternoon until the school year ends. “Take on Me” is a popular 90s song with an upbeat rhythm. I personally think that this was a great choice to start off the weekend.
