After the recently leaked video featuring Donald Trump demeaning women, Michelle Obama took to the campaign trail and called out the Republican nominee for President of the United States on his behaviour. After the recording of Trump bragging about sexually assaulting women surfaced, a number of women have stepped forward describing past encounters during which Trump had groped them or kissed them against their will. Donald Trump has denied all claims that he has assaulted any women and said that that these women have stepped forward just to damage his campaign. He says that these are false accusations, but the detailed accounts of the women and the leaked video clearly show that Donald Trump is certainly capable of such a thing given the attitude that he has about women.
Donald Trump, in the penultimate presidential debate, said, “nobody in the world respects women more than I do.” But this is clearly a huge, and likely false, hyperbole following the release of the leaked video. Michelle Obama said that “she couldn’t believe that… a nominee for the president of the United States has bragged about sexually assaulting women” and that it has “shaken [her] to the core” that a person in that position would say such things. She continued by saying, “a powerful individual speaking freely and openly about sexually predatory behaviour and actually bragging about kissing and groping women… isn’t something we can ignore.”
Donald Trump responded to the video by saying that it was simply “locker room talk”, but whether his response made the lewd comments any less demeaning is open to debate. Michelle Obama, a known supporter of Hillary Clinton, called Trump’s comments “cruel and frightening”. It isn’t the first time that Donald Trump has been accused of devaluing women, and he has faced a good deal of criticism during his campaign for similar comments. With just three weeks left, Michelle Obama left a huge mark on Donald Trump’s campaign and this could prove crucial in the upcoming 2016 presidential elections.
