Migrant Link is Back to Work! A Reflection on their Recent Trip

After a long COVID-caused hiatus, AISG’s community service groups are cautiously returning to making service trips. On Saturday, September 26, accompanied by Migrant Link advisor, Dr. Fielder, and CS Coordinator, Mr. Cheung, members of AISG’s Migrant Link community service group went on an outing to Conghua’s Social Work Center.

Migrant Link is a community service group with the goal of supporting children who live in rural/suburban areas of China while their parents live and work in bigger cities like Guangzhou. The group aims to provide both mental and physical help to these children: outings like the one on Saturday help the group know these children better through visiting them.

On this outing, members of Migrant Link spent a morning at the Conghua Social Work Center and played games with children. Through the Telephone Game, parachute games, and various team-building activities, the group had fun with the children while weaving in English lessons and introducing them to the meaning and significance of the 10 Learner Profile attributes.

Senior Robert Y., one of the Migrant Link coordinators, saw the trip as a success. He says that the kids enjoyed their games, and group members learned a lot about collaboration through running the games.

After seeing her sibling participate in and enjoy Migrant Link, sophomore Yeji L. joined Migrant Link because she enjoys playing with kids and saw the club as a chance to meaningfully bond with them. On this outing, some kids were shy and were more hesitant to participate, so a challenging part of Yeji’s role was to help these kids have fun with the bigger group and learn how to work as a team.

Overall, Yeji’s favorite part of this outing was getting to know the kids through the games and seeing them enjoy the activities that the group prepared. She really watching them getting excited in the parachute game, pictured in the featured image, where the kids ran across the parachute space when Migrant Link members shouted their name or a characteristic that they had.

Looking ahead, Migrant Link hopes to continue helping the kids they visited on Saturday and create awareness for the difficulties faced by these kids. On campus, they will continue fundraising for the kids so that the group can continue their efforts. Help them out with a visit to their Family Fun Day booth!
