A 54 year old former world heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson stepped back into the ring again for an exhibition bout against another former heavyweight boxing champion Roy Jones Jr. Once again we get to see another interesting matchup of 2 boxing legends.
I personally enjoyed it. I didn’t come in with high expectations, I wasn’t expecting a competitive fight between two guys were in their 50s, and would have described it as “competitive sparring contest” before I watched the fight.
I believe many thought Mike’s skills would have eroded more after years of inactivity as we were only shown selective footage of him hitting the pads in short videos as he was training for the match. Instead, and I think to everyone’s surprise he bulled forward with the similar tenacious ferocity he displayed during his peak years, albeit with an older body now more slower and weaker. His defense still looked on point as he bobbed his head, using he’s trademark Peek-a-boo and it was nice to see him remember his defense from he’s younger years, displaying flashed of his prime’s brilliance.
What I would say was the most interesting thing about this bout was Mike’s stamina. Boxing in any age for several rounds is tiring and I expected Tyson to be all gassed out after 3 rounds. On the contrary, Tyson looked to be in great shape and actually looked like he had taken this contest seriously looked to be in fantastic shape for a 54 year old.
Although nothing compared to his younger self in the ring, I will say that to me Tyson at least looked a lot more motivated and energized than he did in his last professional fight against Kevin McBride 15 years ago. I’m sure this exhibition bout wasn’t to everyone’s liking, but I myself wouldn’t mind seeing him put on the famous black shorts again for another exhibition bout. It was great to see an exhibition bout like this and is a good entertainment for the audience.
