On September 11, National Chinese Honor Society (NCHS) celebrated Mid-Autumn Festival in an appreciation event for the local Chinese staff of AISG. The celebration was joined by faculty, as well as middle school students in Ms. Wang’s Chinese A class.

The event started with Mr. Timmerman and Mr. Bunnell giving brief appreciation speeches for the local staff. Both of their speeches consisted of Chinese phrases, eliciting laughter in the crowd. After this short introduction, the students and faculty gathered to sing a traditional Chinese song in celebration of Mid-Autumn Festival. The celebration came to a close with the distribution of mooncakes, which are traditional desserts eaten during this time of the year.

Helena K., the vice president of NCHS, says that the event “went well overall” because the “Chinese staff appreciated our gifts and the singing was better than I imagined.” Helena also comments that she enjoyed giving out the mooncakes because “[she] could see that they were all thankful and it felt nice to share with our community.”

Senior Jimin L., treasurer of NCHS, said that the event was successful because the local staff “seemed to enjoy it and sang along with us.” She also says: “I loved being able to brighten their days and celebrate the festival together. It was definitely a meaningful experience that I will not have the chance to do outside of school.”

For the future, Jimin hopes that NCHS can continue to show appreciation to other Chinese workers by hosting similar events for bus monitors and interns that help with Chinese language classes each year. “I think we can add activities that the school faculty can participate [in] as well, such as making dumplings together. I hope we can make this event even better next year.”
