This year, AISG has a number of new teachers in every department. In the math and science department, there are two new teachers, Mr. Gomes, who teaches math, and Ms. Maine, who teaches science. I interviewed both of them to get some insight into their lives as teachers.
Ms. Maine
Ms. Maine is the new science teacher at AISG. She is originally from the US and has taught in Punxatawney, Pennslyvania, Virginia Beach, Virginia, and St. Joseph, Michigan. Before then, Ms. Maine was a paramedic. AISG is her first overseas and IB teaching post. She said that she loves the school because “everybody is so friendly” and that she “couldn’t hope for a better start to the international experience.” She enjoys running and is one of this year’s cross country coaches. Her goals for this year are to immerse herself “in the culture of the school, really exploring all the different perspectives that it brings.”
Mr. Gomes
Mr. Gomes is a new math teacher at AISG. He is from Brazil and had previously taught in São Paulo at a British school. Even though this is his first overseas post, he enjoys traveling and has been to more than twenty countries. He “really liked the school”, because “the staff and students are friendly and respectful.” He likes the fact that “teachers and students work collaboratively to deliver excellent, quality lessons.” He also liked the community feeling of AISG. Mr. Gomes loves listening to Samba, traditional Brazillian music, but is “a very poor dancer”. He has learned three languages by himself and enjoys studying them. Other than that, Mr. Gomes says that he likes “going to the movies, reading […] astronomy, traveling, and food.”
