As of December 7, 2022, the National Health Commission (NHC) held a press conference in which they released new and improved Covid measures.

During the past few months, in Guangzhou, there were lockdown measures, mass testings, and cancelation of public transports put in place to control Covid outbreaks.

On November 30, 2022, all districts in Guangzhou would remove lockdown measures on “temporary control zones”, while high-risk areas would continue prevention and control measures.

The NHC released the following changes to Covid measures. Risk areas are now only confined to a building and specific floor. Authorities are not allowed to classify a whole community, neighborhood, or district as a high-risk region.

Health codes and Covid test requirements have also been reduced. PCR tests are mandatory only in high-risk areas, however anywhere else will not require testing or health code checks. Additionally, travel to China will no longer require checking the health code upon arrival as long as the passenger has a Covid-19 test result that is negative.

Isolation no longer requires to be in a special quarantine building or hospital, infected people are now allowed to isolate at home. As long as the patient remains in home isolation for six to seven days they only require a double Covid-19 negative test result to be released.

The following months of changed Covid measures will be critical for China to return to its original economic state and to control outbreaks.

A senior, Sharon C. said “I honestly feel relieved about the new measure and happy for the change. Since with the change in measures, we are able to do more stuff without restriction, I can hang out with friends without being afraid of lockdowns.”

“I am really happy that you don’t need 24hr or 48hr codes for most places, so I can go out with friends. Life is returning back to normal and school will most likely be in person soon.” Seamus B., a sophomore.
