New year, new teachers! Another year at AISG has begun, which is why we shall welcome our new members. We have a variety of new members in our faculty community, ranging across various departments.
We have a lot of new members joining our school community this year! They all come from different countries and schools around the world, ranging from Sekolah Pelita Harapan in Indonesia to the American School of Puerto Vallarta in Mexico. These new teachers are all joining different departments in both high school and middle school, and we even have new high school counselors
As new members of the AISG community, some of them feel that they are having a smooth transition into this school — Ms. Janet Hong, one of the new high school counselors, considers her move “different and new, and [thinks that] it’s always fun to explore something new”. Moving to China and a different country is an enormous change, but so far, many of the teachers have had a pleasant transition with the help of the faculty and orientation committee.
On the other hand, some of the new teachers have faced difficulty adapting to the new environment due to the foreign languages and, additionally, the heat. As mentioned by Ms. Gabrielle Randall from the middle school math department, “it’s very different as I have experienced a culture shock due to the exposure to a new country and culture.” This is very common and it can occur to anyone who is a newcomer. Even though it’s an enormous change, there are other aspects to consider: as mentioned by Ms. Cathy Taylor, the other high school counselor, “One of the hardest things for me was coming from a small town to one of the biggest cities in China. This is a beautiful city though, and there is so much to do!”
Moving forward in the school year, all the new teachers vary in their future expectations. For example, Mr. John Lund, who teaches STEM Robotics in room 327 and 328, commented on how he expects “to overtime get know more of the student body, integrate myself into the community more, and learn what the school is all about.” Other teachers share similar expectations, but also include a focus on themselves growing as a professional and an individual.
In order to represent AISG’s culture, let’s welcome them into our community and not forget to greet them as we will constantly see these new faces down the halls and in classrooms.
