This year is the last year of high school for the class of 2019! Although it hasn’t been long since school started, seniors are busy writing their EE’s and IA’s, preparing for upcoming summative’s and lab work, writing college applications, and stressing out about IB exams coming up in May. Senior year seemed so far away for all students, including myself, and it’s also one of the most stressful years of high school. Not only because there are countless deadlines, but because it’s our last opportunity to pull up all potentials, demonstrate academic intelligence, and prepare to step out to the real world.
I held a interview with several seniors and all of the interviewees agreed that they are stressed out and waiting for graduation. Zoe L said, “there are so many deadlines to meet and I’m not [ready to meet] most of them, which is probably the main reason why I’m stressed out.” She adds that she wants to graduate, but is also extremely nervous to go out to society. She was still smiling during the interview, but her anxiety seems to be greater than her excitement for graduation. Carrie L said, “the only thing new about senior year is that we can buy coffee in school, but I lost my ID card (laugh).” She commented, “I definitely think the amount of stress we have has increased and I’ve been busy working on my Biology IA since the beginning of this school year.” Winnie C provided a metaphor for senior year: “It’s like rolling down a hill. You think you can get up, but you keep rolling downhill and then you hit your head on something, you fall into a coma, you wake up and then there’s a deadline that you trip over and then you keep rolling down.” Additionally, Stanley W mentioned that there is a lot more stress than last year, especially if you are applying early to colleges, but he states, “I feel like we are used to being stressed by now.” Instead, he chooses to share something positive about senior year: “it’s my last year of high school.”
This is our final year to work together and see each other everyday at school. Once we throw our graduation hats up in the air, everyone will be walking in different directions to follow their own dreams. Although we have different things we want to achieve in the future we have one common goal. And that goal is to finish strong. Good luck!
