Open Mic Live: Let the Music Speak!

On December 2, 2020, members of the high school community, including both faculties and students, gathered around the newly made grand staircase to enjoy Open Mic Live. Open Mic Live, more commonly known as Open Mic Night, is an annual event hosted by AISG’s Student Council (StuCo), which provides a rare opportunity for both students and teachers to perform in a lively and casual environment.

 

In the previous years, Open Mic Night was held after school as a concluding event following a Spirit Week. Tickets were sold for those who wished to attend the event and involved selling small refreshments to establish a festive atmosphere.

 

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Guangzhou Bureau of Education has forbidden the gathering of students and faculties after school and selling any foods or drinks. As a result, StuCo decided to host Open Mic Live afternoon during school time from 1:30 to 3:00 PM, where all members of the high school community could enjoy the performances without additional fees.

 

Tickets were only sold for additional activities that different community service groups provided. Despite the absence of refreshment options, a joyful atmosphere was established, thanks to both teachers and students for their passionate performances.

 

Tony P., a sophomore at AISG, remarked on his experience at the Open Mic Live, commenting that it was extremely “exciting” and “fun” to watch his peers and teachers perform. He added that “I honestly did not expect the performances to be so entertaining, but it was very engaging and fun to watch.”

 

Bryan S., a senior at AISG, remarked that it was a “great experience” for having the opportunity to “witness [his] talented peers’ singing and performing.” He further commented that he “salutes [the performers] for their bravery” and thinks it was a “great event to bring the community altogether.”

 

During Open Mic Live, live sign-ups also took place for students and faculties to sign up on the spot and perform after the prearranged performances. This gave opportunities to students who were initially unwilling to perform but had second thoughts after witnessing the event’s joyful and supportive atmosphere.
