In the end the third quarter, parents were invited to attend the parent teacher conferences last week March 24th and 25th to converse with teachers from different subjects about their children’s education. Each sessions were around one and a half hour and all the parents rotated around the library to meet with different teachers. Parent and Teacher conferences provided parents with teachers’ thoughtful insights into their child’s academic studies, as well as their approaches to learning. Some students also decided to come along to listen to what the teachers had to say about them.
While parents think of the conferences as a good opportunity to get to know their sons/daughters better, students hold different opinions before the conference: “I don’t think it’s necessary for students to go to the conferences, we already know enough about what’s going on in school,” says Sophie E in 9th grade. Some people even appeared to be reluctant about their parents going to the conference, such as what freshmen Minting said, “I don’t want my parents to go because I’m scared about what the teachers are going to tell them.”
Although most students remained negative on PTC before it took place, after their parents’ meet with the teachers, a lot of students seemed to feel better about it, Sophie E thought that “the meeting was okay afterwards because the teacher my mom interviewed didn’t really say anything that bad about me, I think I was worrying too much.” Some on the other hand, even seemed to enjoy going to PTC, which is a big difference to her thought about the conference before, “I liked the PTC, the teachers were all very nice and I felt pretty good.” (Minting 9)
This semester’s parent teacher conference seemed to end on a good note, and hopefully in the future, students can try to be more passionate about it.
