Please Turn off Your Cellphones and Cameras During the Concert

The build-up, the excitement, and then the thrill of seeing a favourite performer on stage in front of you. Most people that have been to a concert can tell you that they enjoyed the entire experience. However, as technology such as cell phones becomes more common, it is also becoming more of a nuisance in society.

Not only do cell phones engage people to the extent that they become addicted, but they also provide applications with which memories can be recorded and saved. This may not sound like a bad thing, nor always is it.

When camera phones are used moderately, they can save the moments and help us recollect those precious memories. However, precious memories can only be cherished when they exist. A poor image and sub-par audio would not be able to sign anything but the onerous filming process in a tightly packed concert hall.

Yet, people today seem to have a tough time recognising this. Even today, thousands upon thousands of people hold their phones and tablets above their heads  to capture the concert at which they are.

Anyone who has been to a concert recently could tell how irritating it is to have nearly every person around holding up a device blocking your vision.

Instead of just being present and trying to seize the moment as per carpe diem, many tap out the moment they unlock their cell phones. They think that since they are recording it, they do not need to pay as close attention to what is going on.

On the other hand, a person who is not recording anything can enjoy the atmosphere, music, and details that would go unnoticed by the filmmaking maniacs.

The fact that most people at concerts would choose to record it instead of being fully present is a clear reflection of our society as a whole. This shows us that, in general, most people are somehow constantly glued to their devices, even if they are not physically staring at it.

If the majority of our society would rather be gazing at a screen than talking to someone or enjoying their surroundings, what does that mean for our future? Does it mean that, in fifty years, everyone will be sitting in big chairs with futuristic screens in front of their faces, “talking” to their companions by typing something up? Will everyone become obese because they are being deprived of exercise and end up drinking all their meals? Doesn’t this sound a bit like the humans from the movie Wall-E?
I am not saying that our fate lies in a spaceship and the hands of two amiable robots, but I am saying that technology is causing us to detach ourselves, just as is shown in Wall-E. In order to prevent outcomes such as those in the movie, I suggest that human beings go back to connecting with one another.
