During meeting on Thursday with leaders of women’s religious order, pope Francis asked why deacons and other religious service positions are only limited to male. Pontiff responded that they’ll look into whether women will be admitted as a role in churches without offering further details. If women are allow to serve for the churches, it will be a big turning point for Roman Catholic churches, since women were not given the permission to take part in any roles.
However, News.va suggested that there was evidence that there were female deacons in the early centuries of church that’s named in the Book of Romans. Pope Francis questioned the statistic whether the female deacons took on the role as ministers and priest or if they’re only limited to baptizing women.
Pope Francis view on considering to ordain female as ministers and priests contrasts his predecessors. According to Pope John Paul II he wrote in the 1994 apostolic letter Ordinatio Sacerdotails that church should not make women priests. Using Jesus as an example, he only chose men to serve as his twelve disciples.
