On October 4, 2021, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Part 2 started streaming on major streaming platforms like Netflix, Crunchy Roll, and others. This is the second half of the anime series’s season 1, which was originally adapted from a novel by Rifujin Na Magonote.
In the anime series, a 34-year-old Japanese NEET is evicted from his home after his parent’s death. He realizes that his life is pointless and he is an underachiever. While walking down a street, he intercepts a speeding truck heading towards a group of teenagers. The main character pulls one of the teenagers out of harm’s way before getting hit and killed by the truck himself. However, he awakens in a world of sorcery and swords in a baby’s body.
“Mushoku Tensei is one of the best isekai I’ve ever watched,” said Richie L., a junior at AISG. As Mushoku Tensei’s first cour was a fan favorite of the last year, this year has been no different. Like any other anime series, Mushoku Tensei has many twists and turns to keep its audience on the edge of their seats, but it maintains authentic story-telling that comments on important real-world issues like sexism and power.
Controversial discussions have consistently swarmed Mushoku Tensei, where many viewers have argued whether it is the pioneer of Isekai anime or if it is simply the story of a repulsive pedophilic man reborn as a baby in an over-sexualized world.
“I felt disgusted with how the anime made it okay for a 34-year-old paedophilic man to be reborn as a baby in a world like this,” commented sophomore Rick L. While some fans comment on how the anime positively approaches human beings’ sexual desires, others criticize Rifujin’s narrative of sex and female submission as a representation of masculinity and power.
