Prom: You Should Come!

Prom is coming soon on Saturday, May 25. This year, it will be hosted at the Ritz Carlton hotel, with ticket prices at 550 RMB. At AISG, prom is an annual school event where any student in high school can attend this event and hang out with friends and dance. From 6 to 9 PM, there will be food, music, and performances.

Prom started out as a celebration in the U.S.A. around the 1800s. It began as an annual ball dance for college students to learn social skills and manners, but has since been modified for high school seniors to have their final school event. Because our school is small, we allow all students from all of the high school to come. A tradition that is still kept from the 1800s is the idea of dressing as formally and elegantly as possible. There is also a tradition within prom of selecting Prom King and Queen. This tradition is another tradition that is kept today. During prom, Prom King and Queen are nominated through voting. Last year, Prom King and Prom Queen were Andrew R. and Belle F.

The main organizer of this event is the community service group Pulse. Pulse coordinator Bonny C. states, “Prom was successful last year because all the Pulse members have committed to set-up the venue.” I asked what was the attendance last year; to my surprise, she said: “Approximately 130 people went to prom last year.” This number was much higher than I expected. Another question that came up was what other things can you do at prom. “Besides eating and dancing, there will be performances and more eliciting stuff happening this year. Last year we had backdrops: people took pictures and hung out with their friends.” Prom has been successful in the previous years—this year, it will only be better.

Prom is highly anticipated and promoted, as it is the last school event for the seniors before their graduation ceremony. Although tickets are considered expensive, a ticket guarantees buffet at a 5-star hotel and a memorable evening with friends. For people who want to attend, this year’s theme is eloquence.
