Next Wednesday, March 8th, is International Women’s Day and Roots & Shoots People has an event for you!

International Women’s Day is an official UN holiday on March 8th. According to UN, International Women’s Day is “A day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. International Women’s Day first emerged from the activities of labour movements at the turn of the twentieth century in North America and across Europe. Since those early years, International Women’s Day has assumed a new global dimension for women in developed and developing countries alike. The growing international women’s movement, which has been strengthened by four global United Nations women’s conferences, has helped make the commemoration a rallying point to build support for women’s rights and participation in the political and economic arenas.”

Roots & Shoots People community service group is deciding to celebrate this great holiday this year by planning an event to fundraise and raise awareness for causes relating to women. Starting on next Monday March 6, Roots & Shoots People will be selling raffle tickets and Thank You Cards outside of the cafeteria. In addition to the sales, Roots & Shoots People group also plan on giving all of the female staff members of AISG (ayis, bus monitors, etc) a cupcake and a Thank You card.

If you are a student or a teacher and want to show your support for the International Women’s Day, participate by dressing in either PINK, PURPLE or GOLD on Wednesday. Roots & Shoots People plan on giving free wristbands (with feminist messages) to all those who participate .
