On February 25, popular television show, Shadowhunters, premiered the first episode of the second half of its third season. The story of Shadowhunters is based on The Mortal Instruments series—written by Cassandra Clare—where main protagonist Clary and her friends fight demons to save the world from destruction. The series, created by Ed Decter, airs every Monday on American television channel, Freeform.
Shadowhunters takes its audience through a thrilling ride of action-filled scenes intertwined with emotional side-stories of friendships and relationships as it follows Clary’s journey. Although the show does generally follow the original plot of the novels, it does not fail to surprise its fans with unexpected twists and turns. Most importantly, Shadowhunters has been applauded for its inclusive casting and characters. The actors and the characters they play represent not only people of minority races but also those of the LGBTQ+ community.
However, despite the positive response from its audience, fans must bid farewell to their favorite characters once the remaining twelve episodes of the season end. Last summer, it was announced that Shadowhunters would be canceled after season three. The main reason for this sudden news was due to Netflix—a financial supporter of the show—pulling out of its output deal with Shadowhunters.
The announcement of the cancellation sparked a wide-spread movement by fans who wanted to see the show continue. They took to social media to express their passion and created a hashtag, #SaveShadowhunters, which trended worldwide. Fans surprised the world with their determination by raising nearly $30,000, flying a plane with the hashtag over the Netflix headquarters, and promoting the show on billboards in Times Square.
The #SaveShadowhunters movement also sparked the interest of people outside of the United States. A fan living in South Korea bought displays to advertise the show in subway stations.
Although it is unlikely that Shadowhunters will continue to run after this season, the dedication that fans showed through its efforts to support the show has been inspirational. The final episode is set to air on May 13. If you are interested in action movies with supernatural creatures, this show may be for you!
