Prom is just a few weeks away and some of us have yet to find a prom dress. Prom dresses can vary by style, length, size, and color. Whether you are planning to wear a short dress for prom or a long prom dress, a mermaid lace dress, or a tulle ball gown, choosing your perfect prom dress can be a fun and exciting process. However, finding the perfect dress isn’t exactly a piece of cake.
So, I investigated and compiled the three main methods people are using to buy their prom dresses this year!
1. Taobao (淘宝)
Shopping online has a lot of benefits: no need to wait in line, leave the house, or even change out of your clothes. Although shopping online comes with a lot of benefits, we’ve also seen online shopping horror stories on social media. So before you buy your dress online make sure to check the size chart.
Shirley. W, a junior got two dresses from Taobao. She said it was really convenient because she was unable to find any shops that sold prom dresses near her. She also mentions how most Taobao shops are refundable, so if you don’t like a dress you can always return it to the seller.
2. Wedding Street
If you want to actually look at the dresses and try them on, wedding street may be the place to go! Each shop seems to have its own personality and unique set of dresses to choose from.
However, most of the shop owners do not speak English so if you can’t speak Chinese it might be wise to use translator or bring a friend to help you find your ideal prom dress.
Vikisha G., a junior, got her dress in Wedding Street and said it was a fun and rewarding experience especially because she was able to try on dresses and see them in person first.

3. Rental
Typically, most people spend most of their budget on their prom dress leaving little left for makeup, accessories, and hair. A solution to this is renting a prom dress. There are some places in Wedding Street that allow you to rent their dresses for half the original price.
