Season 3 Sports Soon: What Should You Expect?

• Bookmarks: 543041

Season 3 sports are starting on Monday February 1, and will last all the way until April 18. Skim through this article for a bit more information on what it means to be a part of these teams!

PRACTICES

Varsity practices happen every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. This schedule leaves Wednesdays free for athletes who participate in clubs like Math Club and MUN. With the new schedule, Season 3 athletics will also not clash with community service meetings, which happen on Tuesday from 2:15-3:00. However, students wishing to join the musical this year will be unable to do sports this season.

Practices run from 3:10, and will end in time for athletes to take the 4:50 bus home. As of right now, girls and boys soccer teams will practice simultaneously on the school soccer field. Badminton practices will be at a badminton center near the school.

GAMES AND TOURNAMENTS

GISAC, APAC, and Tri-Cities, three major tournaments that our teams used to attend annually, have been cancelled this year due to COVID-19, as they have been for other sports. According to the Athletics and Activities Office, individual games with other schools have been cancelled as well due to recent COVID-19 outbreaks, but the tentative expectation is that games will resume in mid-March. Currently, the Office’s goal is to arrange at least one home and one away game for all teams, with any additional games being bonuses.

BEING AN ATHLETE

What is it like to be an athlete in AISG, at the high school level? Freshman Vivianna P. has joined two sports, volleyball and basketball, this year. Although she says that playing as one of the youngest on these teams was intimidating, because it’s scary to mess up in front of older players, her overall impression of HS sports isn’t negative. Vivianna feels that high school sports is more competitive than middle school sports, and it also comes gives her the chance to be “able to meet people from upper grades and become close”.

Junior Borui C. has been in volleyball and badminton for three years. In these three years, he’s learned many specific volleyball and badminton skills, meeting goals which he did not expect to at the beginning of freshman year. He’s enjoyed the Varsity experience so far, because it has given him the chance to play sports that he really likes.

REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS

This year, there are no cuts, only the expectation that you stay committed and attend all practices as you would in any normal Varsity team. The only thing you’ll need to attend the first practice on Monday is your sports equipment, your completed PPE Packet, your signed PAC Form and your excitement to be a part of Season 3 Athletics!

As Mr. Kydd has stated many times this year: “We should all be thankful for the opportunity to play, be active, and refine our skills in a time of uncertainty. So many student-athletes around the world would love to be in your shoes, so take advantage.”
