Seiza: A Traditional Sitting Position

• Bookmarks: 411611

Seiza, which literally means “proper sitting”, is a formal sitting posture of Japan. After my visit to Japan, iI have learned much about this detail of Japanese culture, including its origin and benefits.

The Seiza, contrary to popular beliefs, actually originated in China as a traditional sitting method before the invention of chairs. Viewed as a method of sitting which shows manners and politeness, Seiza became the formal sitting method of Japan around the 17th century. From an outsider perspective, Seiza can easily be mistaken to be the act of kneeling, but there are some differences. Seize requires the person to have both of their legs pressed together, then sit down on the lower legs, with the feet bent straight to support the buttocks. The placement of the hands may differ depending on the situation, but normally, they are folded upon the upper thighs. Lastly, the back needs to be bent straight in an upright sitting position. In Japan, Seiza is used in many situations and activities, such as eating, shogi, martial arts training, and especially activities with traditional background.

Aside from the strict form of Seiza, stepping into and out of the position is also a delicate process, which may vary depending on the situation and the clothing worn. I will avoid going into detail here as it is unlikely that anyone will actually follow these procedures.

People who are new to Seiza may become uncomfortable after a while, as it strains the lower leg and requires a certain degree of pliability to have the lower and upper legs be pressed together. It is advised to only sit for 10 to 15 minutes at a time if the strain becomes too much for beginners before being able to sit for long periods of time. Though it may sound uncomfortable to some, this form of sitting offers a variety of benefits. These benefits include easing the pressure placed on the tail bone as the buttocks and thighs are what is being used to support the body. Sitting in Seiza also trains the core muscles used to keep the person sitting up straight in the position. Seize can also improve circulation across the body, promotes wakefulness, and increases concentration.

Overall, Seiza offers many benefits to the body and long term practices of Seiza can help to strengthen both the body and the mind. Students could try sitting in Seiza if possible as its benefits will most certainly help  when studying.
