On October 26, the AISG Quiz Bowl team traveled to Shanghai for the 2019 Fall Invitational. They brought four teams, with either three or four players. The tournament consisted of round-robin-style games in the first half of the day, in which the teams were placed in brackets; the second half of the day consisted of elimination rounds based on wins and losses.
The AISG A team, consisting of seniors Jennifer Y., Terry M., Ben L., and Abby P., played both the round robins and elimination rounds undefeated. In the finals, they played against the A team from Hong Kong International School (HKIS). By the end of the game, AISG was ahead by ten points. However, due to a technical error earlier in the match, one of the questions had to be thrown out. Instead, another question was read. HKIS managed to beat AISG to the buzzer and win the last points needed to get first place. The AISG A team placed second.
The AISG B team, consisting of sophomores Jet C., Martin W., Billy B., and Dachan S., also played well, winning a few games and losing a few. The C and D teams, which were made entirely of beginners, also did well, especially for their first tournament.
The teams are as follows:
A Team:
- Jennifer Y. (captain)
- Terry M.
- Ben L.
- Abby P.
B Team
- Jet C. (captain)
- Billy B.
- Martin W.
- Dachan S.
C Team
- Ethan Y.
- Nathan K.
- Tony K.
D Team
- Thomas X.
- Thomas H.
- Josh R.
Billy B., a returning player who specializes in history, attended the tournament as a player on the B Team. Billy said that “overall, the tournament went well”, but “compared to other tournaments it was not as good, and the management could have been handled better.” However, overall he agreed that it was a fun tournament.
Thomas H., a new player on the D team, said that “as a freshman, [the team was] new to quiz bowl and the experience in general”. Despite the outcomes of the matches, “the experience was very valuable” and he hopes that the group will continue to work to improve.
Jennifer Y., the president of AISG Quiz Bowl and captain of the A Team, said that the tournament “was interesting and enriching” and “a great learning experience for all of our teams, especially for the new players.” She also said that, for the returning players, “it was a reminder of the ways in which [they] might improve in the future.”
Overall, the Quiz Bowl team did well at the tournament and had a good time. They will be preparing for the next tournament hosted at AISG in February.
