The community service Global Issues Network (GIN) holds various activities and booths every year, with the sole purpose of helping the unprivileged girls in Shaoguan, a prefecture-level city in Northern Guangdong Province. The fund raised through all activities are donated to the Shaoguan girls, improving the environment in which the girls receive an education.
GIN members visit Shaoguan twice every year, interacting with the girls and sharing stories about their background. This October, several GIN members have visited Shaoguan, playing games with the Shaoguan girls and visiting their house. They were able to build new friendships and further understand the different cultures they come from.
In response to the Shaoguan visit, GIN has invited the Shaoguan girls to visit AISG. 18 Shaoguan girls have visited our campus on Thursday (Nov 29) and have stayed until Saturday (Dec 1). They have participated in some of the class, learning English and exploring the study environment in an international school.
It was their first time visiting central Guangzhou, and the girls were surprised to experience the Western education system and Guangzhou, a city quite different from their hometown. Zhang Meng, a junior Shaoguan girl, said her own opinion on this trip. She said: “For people like us, it’s not really easy to experience the Western culture and I think that the Guangzhou trip has widened the way we perceive the world”.
The girls had an amazing time in Guangzhou and it would have impossible without the immense effort the GIN coordinators have put, as well as all the members who have hosted, and guided the Shaoguan girls.
