This year’s tennis team started on our very first day of school, August 15th, with 9 girls and 6 boys. However, after a few days, our team was left with the minimum number of members to qualify for APAC. Is the team facing some struggles? According to the team’s Coach, Mr. Webster, “This is the 4th day in a row that with the loss of both of last year’s number 1 players and with the rainouts” the team is getting a slow start to the season. In fact, 5 out of 6 days the team has had to cancel practice, and if our Guangzhou weather persists, chances are that more practices might get canceled. The two-star tennis players from last year were Grace T, an alumn from the graduating class of 2018, last year’s best singles player on the girl’s team and Boon Y., the best singles player on the boy’s team last year that could not join this season because it overlapped with Robotics.
Although it’s been a rough start, tennis player Amanda D. is “excited to start playing” with her teammates and the captain, Megan H., has been “absolutely amazing so far”, the Coach explained. In the meantime, they have been watching Tennis videos and improving their game to prepare for Tri-Cities, which will take place next Friday in Beijing. This tournament is a valuable experience for the team as they have the opportunity to get familiar with the other APAC teams that they will be competing against later on.
