Alongside Facebook and Snapchat, Instagram is one of the ‘big three’ of current social media applications. With the freedom to post about most things, Instagram is a platform for many people to express their opinions, showcase their hobbies, and boast about their lavish lifestyles.
Following someone’s Instagram is usually your acknowledgement of knowing them, or that you are friends. This is why such a big fuss seems to be made when one person decides to unfollow another. However, just because you choose to unfollow someone does not necessarily mean that you dislike them as a person.
There are several reasons why your ‘unfollowing’ could be justified. First, it could simply be because you don’t like the content that they choose to post. If someone just keeps reposting dank memes that they found on Facebook, it may be a chore to look through the same memes over and over again. Also, maybe someone may be posting content too much. This is called spamming, and if you don’t want to know about every little detail about someone’s life, it’s totally fine if you want to unfollow them. Another reason could be the importance of the follower to following ratio that many seem to care so much about. Though extremely superficial, it actually seems to be a real issue amongst Instagrammers. It’s basically attempting to keep your following count lower than your follower count, which equals a ‘positive’ ratio. If this is your reason to unfollow, it’s also totally fine, because most people do it anyway.
After all, Instagram is just another social media platform that will fade away one day. Do whatever makes you happy on it, and have fun using it.
