On March 13th AISG launched its first ever career fair. It was an afternoon where upper secondary students could go around and talk with experts in different professions and learn about all different kinds of industries to hopefully get inspired by their stories and find undiscovered passions.
30 different experts came, and students chose who they wanted to learn from. There were three sessions each with a 15-minute presenting time and a 15-minute question time. And a final time before school ended to talk to anyone that students may have not gotten to see
The aim is to create “future-ready” students who know what passions and talents they want to pursue later on. This was a great opportunity for grades 9 and 10 to get insight on what DP subjects to take, as well as grades 11 and 10 to get an idea on what they want to pursue in university.
Many presenters thought that this was a wonderful experience and a great opportunity to learn and explore.
Giselle Bonet was a presenter at the career fair. She is the Managing Director of “Pinchili China Service Limited” and specialized in trade and social media. She gave a wonderful talk about what influenced her decisions and explain to students how to get into the trade and social media business.
“When you learn from somebody that is doing the job at the moment, they can tell you the challenges and what they do,” she said.
Many students enjoyed career fair, and have suggestions on what could be done to make next year’s one even better
“It helped me see all the different varieties of professions that you can have aside from just the generic ones that people tell you, I didn’t know that a career consultant was a profession, so it definitely helped me explore different pathways,” Christine L. a grade 10 student said, “But I wish we had more time to talk to the speakers, I feel like 3 sessions was not enough. I wanted to talk to more people.”
“I think it was great because it was a really good experience for us students to go up and experience people and life, from a variety of different workplaces and I think it was very helpful because I could see different opportunities and I was able to get some insight on future things I want to do,” an anonymous student said.
Overall, AISG’s first career fair was a huge success and both students and presenters are excited for what more there is to come in the following years.
