Swimming in the Cold: APAC Swimming

• Bookmarks: 291195

From January 23 to 27, our varsity swimmers were off in Beijing, where APAC Swimming 2019 was hosted. Although the average temperature of Beijing during the tournament was barely above 0 degrees, the swimmers managed to break 2 and set 2 school records. Additionally, many swimmers have broke their personal best records as they swam effortfully in this tournament. Improving from last year, our girls placed last and boys placed second last.

To further improve and prepare for APAC swimming next year, some of our swimmers have decided to train off-season as well. One of the reasons behind why AISG is not known to have the best swimmers is because of short training times. While athletes from other schools train all year long, our swimmers are only given 2 months to get in shape.

Bonnie W. one of our three freshmen in the team, states: “Being in a sports team is completely different from being in a fine arts team.” As a strings player, Bonnie W. has already been to APAC once but was amazed by the difference between a tournament and a performance. Having competitors allowed her to grow as an athlete and made her want to improve her swim time and try harder for the next season.

This was the second and last APAC for Alfa L. and he definitely feels sad and dissatisfied as he really enjoyed the entire process of being a part of a team and traveling elsewhere to compete. He explains: “Being involved in APAC not only allows you to meet new people and compete in a tournament. The entire process and its outcome is simply wonderful.” He wishes that he had attended APAC at least once more as he enjoyed each one of his APAC tournaments. APAC Swimming 2019 will be especially memorable in the future, as everyone broke at least one of their personal best records, which is a huge accomplishment and makes Alfa exceedingly proud and joyful. He would like to tell the team that “We have grown so much over the season — both individually and as a team” and wishes future swimmers of AISG the best luck.
