It’s a time of the year to be thankful towards many people, especially to teachers, who care about our learning and our growth as students. It has been noticed by the StuCo members that teachers aren’t often appreciated by the students themselves, as the PTA are the only ones who organize something for teachers to show them some appreciation: hence, teacher appreciation week was created. Lisa M., StuCo’s Executive Council President, commented how it would be nice to “involve students to show thanks to our teachers” through their participation in writing thank you notes.
StuCo organized this event so that on Monday, November 18, high school students would express their appreciation to their teachers on post it notes, which were collected for the purpose of joining them to make a big poster for teachers. This token of appreciation was decorated with school-related memes along the sides. For Friday, as a closing to teacher appreciation week, StuCo organized a mini-breakfast delivery with personalized orders for each teacher. To do this, StuCo handed out mini surveys similar to hotels, where teachers filled in a door hanger to indicate which options of items they would like to receive. These were given out Friday morning as a good way for them to start their day!
It’s important to demonstrate our gratitude towards people around us, and in this case, our teachers especially because of all of the hard work they do to ensure we receive a good quality education. According to a senior, Aoki Y., “I think it’s important to always show gratitude for their energy and efforts they put into our learning on the daily basis through our interactions. That being said, it’s very easy to forget to be grateful on a daily basis so a thank you card can act as a reminder of our gratitude when we fail to do so on the normal.” By writing a nice note or even just a thank you note might brighten any teacher’s day!
The statement above was confirmed by Mrs. Martin-Beauer after she commented: “Appreciation in general is important. As a teacher, when somebody says thank you of being my teacher, it reminds me that I do have an impact in the world.” She further mentions the importance of sincerity behind such action of gratitude, which is an additional aspect to consider. From a teacher’s perspective, she also includes how this activity was very spontaneous and enjoyable, but it’s not necessary to organize a big event every time just to demonstrate appreciation. A simple thank you is pleasant once in a while.
Teacher appreciation week is a good reminder of our teachers’ dedication and efforts into the education we are receiving. It wouldn’t harm us as students to show them the impact they’ve had in our lives, even if it’s to a small extent.
