The 88th Academy Awards

The 88th Academy Awards ceremony took place on February 28, 2016 at the Dolby theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles it started at 5:30pm and ended at 8:30pm. The event was hosted by actor Chris Rock (this being his second time as he also hosted the 77th Academy Awards in 2005),it was explained why they brought Rock back as host, saying, “Chris Rock is truly the MVP of the entertainment industry. Comedian, actor, writer, producer, director, documentarian — he’s done it all. He’s going to be a phenomenal Oscar host!”.

Although the ceremony did go well, shortly after the nominations were announced, many media outlets observed a lack of diversity amongst the nominees in major categories; Academy President Cheryl Boones stated:

“Of course I am disappointed, but this is not to take away the greatness.We are moving forward and will continue to move forward with conversation and action.”

Many awards were given to amazing actors and actresses: Alicia Vikander won best supporting actress, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu won best director etc…But the most popular award of the event was Leonardo DiCaprio´s who won for best actor for his new movie “The Revenant, after being nominated 5 times he finally won the Oscar and gave a speech focusing on Climate Change:

“Making ‘The Revenant’ was about man’s relationship to the natural world, the world that we collectively felt in 2015 as the hottest year in reported history — our production needed to move to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow,” DiCaprio said. “Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It’s the most urgent threat facing our entire species and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating.”

Apart from the nominations and awards the weirdest yet most amazing thing was the 200$ gift bag given to everyone who attended the celebration. The 2016 Oscars apart from being rather unsurprising were the most expected event of the year.
