The Death of Serial Killer Charles Manson

“You know, a long time ago crazy meant something. Nowadays everybody’s crazy.” On November 19, 2017, one of the most notorious criminals and cult leaders of the 20th century, Charles Manson, died in jail at the age 83. Manson organized a crime group called the “Manson Family”. Their famous crimes include the murder of Gary Hinman, actress Sharon Tate, and businessman Leno LaBianca.

Manson was born to a corrupt teen mother, Kathleen Maddox. Maddox was an alcoholic and was sentenced to jail during Manson’s childhood. After Maddox was released, she and Manson moved to Charleston. Young Manson often skipped school while her mother was out drinking constantly. Maddox re-married to an alcoholic and sent Manson to a boys’ school run by priests. In Manson’s childhood, he already demonstrated aggressive behavior and stole items multiple times, even from his own family.

Manson’s was caught raping a boy along with other offenses and homosexual acts in 1952. He behaved well in prison and was released before he turned 21. An imprisonment did not stop Manson’s greeds. He attempted to steal cash from a US Treasury check and was sentenced for more than a decade. Manson was released in 1967, where he started a new legacy. Manson attracted numerous followers in the Bay Area, and he began planning for crimes and abusing drugs. The Manson Family robbed, raped and even killed. Manson himself set a goal to stun the biggest names in Hollywood. In July 1969, Manson instructed his followers to find Gary Hinman for drug money. Hinman did not cooperate, so he was murdered violently.

Less than 2 weeks later, Manson ordered his loyal follower Tex Watson to bring 3 female followers to slay everyone who was in the house of married celebrity couple Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate. Polanski, a future Oscar winner, was luckily in London, while his pregnant wife Tate and 4 other servants were ruthlessly murdered. Tate begged for mercy and requested to kill her after she gives birth, but she was cruelly ignored. Family members wrote “pig” on the front door with the blood of the victims. The murders gained nation-wide attention, just as Manson had expected. Just the following night, Manson took family members Tex Watson, Pat Kreinwinkel, and Leslie Van Houten to the address of supermarket executive Leno LaBianca and his wife. Once again, they committed horrific murders.

Manson family members were arrested and put to a death sentence in 1970. Family members showed bizarre behavior in court, often joking about their killings without showing a sign of regret.Unfortunately, the death sentence was abolished in California not long before Manson and family members were planned to be executed. Manson spent the next 40 years of his life in prison and looking for parole multiple times. His requests were declined all the times. Fellow criminals and family members Tex Watson, Susan Atkins, and Patricia Kreinwinkel all looked for parole but were never released from jail. Sharon Tate’s mother, Doris Tate, played a major role in preventing parole of these vicious murderers, she constantly fought for her daughter’s rights and influenced decisions from judges multiple times.

Doris Tate died before the 21st century, so family members sought parole even more often. Thankfully, none of them were released. Earlier this year, Leslie Van Houten’s parole was approved by the court, but still needs Jerry Brown, the Governor of California’s approval. In my opinion, I think that these criminals should never be released because their victims will never get paroled out of their graves. Since the death sentence is abolished, the criminals should serve their whole life in jail and be grateful that they still live. Van Houten is a model prisoner, yet she was a ruthless murderer. She deserves better privileges in prison, but she is still not trustable in society. In addition, I support the legalization of the death sentence. Ending lives of the murderers’ are the fairest way to restore justice for the victim.
