The Faster I Run, The Slower You Get: IASAS Exchange

During the four-day weekend, the cross country team participated in the Thailand IASAS Cross Country Invitational hosted by the International School of Bangkok.

Last year, due to the haze from Indonesia that affected Kuala Lumpur as well, IASAS was cancelled. This year, things are back in full swing. The Cross Country team left for Bangkok, Thailand on Thursday, September 15 late at night and left for Pungwaan Resort in Kanchanburi the morning after. The team then ran on a 4km trail and swam in the resort pool. Early Saturday morning, all 12 participating schools went to the nearby course, a 5.3km trail that leads out into  fields of tapioca, dirt paths and rocky hills.

There were approximately 100 runners, boys and girls. The meet is one of the biggest cross country meets as it is a combination of both APAC and IASIS schools from all over Asia. It was definitely a highly challenging course with a rocky terrain and paths full of dirt or mud, and that was exacerbated by the burning heat and lack of trees for shade throughout the whole course.

Nevertheless, the AISG runners kept up with other schools in the blazing heat and gave it their best effort, with the boys’ team placing 9th and the girl’s team placing 11th in the Invitational Exchange.

After the course, the runners were split into groups mixed and matched with other schools as they proceeded to the Low Ropes Challenge Course located near the resort. The challenge included walking on a tightrope across the water, zip-lining, paddle-boating, walking on hanging tires and swinging on ropes, with a point awarded to each person who made it across in the group. Runners also got to socialize, forging new friendships when swimming, playing basketball, volleyball, soccer, ping-pong, and swimming in the breathtaking scenery in Thailand, which made the meet that much more memorable.
