With its China-friendly storyline and casting, the movie “The Meg (2018)” aims big at Asia. In fact, those components don’t necessarily guarantee that the audience will bite (Variety.com). Throughout the past few decades, the portrayal of minorities became one of the major issues in Hollywood. In fact, the “Crazy Rich Asian” was an unprecedented breakthrough to such convention. After “Crazy Rich Asian” was played on the screen, Hollywood introduced several other films with heavy Chinese casting. “The Meg (2018)” is one of the few Hollywood blockbusters with Asian protagonists. The international cast of this movie is a reflection of Hollywood’s adaptation to the diversity of actors. The Meg 2018 is a science fiction film directed by John Turteltaub.
The movie begins with a submarine getting attacked by the 70-foot long shark called Megladon, which was thought to be extinct (Rotten Tomatoes). With a 75-foot sea creature strolling around, the Chinese Oceanographer Dr. Minway Zhang (Winston Chao) resolved to rescue his crew, Lori, Toshi, and The Wall trapped in the sunken submersible. While Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham), a professional rescue diver previously worked for United State Navy lead the rescue team, Dr. Zhang and her daughter Suying (Li Bingbing) has supervised the mission through the international undersea observational program.
There are many action scenes throughout the movie, each of them is thrilling and remarkable at its own right. A series of a quick action scene of Statham was revealed at first trailer of the movie. One of the most striking scenes in The Meg was when Jonas tags on Magledon to insert the tracking device, who then trace back Jonas at high speed. Although the scene was taken without Megladon’s presence, Jason Statham’s acting was so natural and real that made the audiences fail to recall that the Megalodon was a CGI.
Although “The Meg” took nearly 20 years in making, it received a great deal of criticism because of its China-friendly casting (Li Bingbing and Winston Chao). In fact, the diversity of the actor is necessary for a proper reflection of a society. Regardless of all the criticism, the movie received has surpassed all the expectations by making $157 million after its debut on August 10, 2018, at Beijing Water Cube.
